Ingredients
- 2 star anise
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or 1 cinnamon stick)

- Pinch of kosher salt
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1/4 cup cassava flour
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 4 to 5 tablespoons sugar (to taste)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons rum, optional
- 2 cups cut-up fresh fruit, plus more sliced for garnish, such as guava (see Cook's Note)
- 2 teaspoons lime zest
- 4 fresh banana leaves, washed, optional
