Ingredients
- Tamarind Sauce Ingredients:
- 1/2 package of tamarind pulp (about 7 ounces) cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- 2 cups water
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon sambal oelek (ground fresh red chili paste)
- 4 tablespoon fish sauce
- Beef Ingredients:
- 1/4 teaspoon 5-spice powder
- 1 teaspoon chopped garlic
- Several twists of black pepper
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 8 ounces New York sirloin strip trimmed of fat
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons of tamarind sauce (see recipe above)
- 1 tablespoon crisp shallot flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Thai basil roughly chopped
- 1 small firm fresh plantain with the peel left on
- 3 tablespoon white vinegar to mix with a bowl of cold water
- Chopped peanuts for garnish
